The famous physicist Luis Walter Alvarez made great advances in a discipline called particle physics.  Particle physics is the study of the basic elements of matter, such as atoms.  Because of his work on this field, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1968. 

In 1995, Mario Molina, a chemist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, received the phone call that scientists everywhere work and hope for.  The caller was a colleague of Mario's from Sweden, where the Nobel Prizes are awarded. 

Severo Ochoa was a very important scientist who was forced to leave his home in Spain and move all around the world.  He never stopped working, however, and eventually received the greatest honor a scientist can get: the Nobel Prize.
